As night falls, the attention turns to one of the Burdekin’s most iconic traditions, the First Fire of the sugar cane crushing season. The Burdekin is one of the few places in Australia where cane paddocks are still burnt before harvest, making it truly a unique experience. Watch as flames ignite the cane paddock, filling the night with glowing light, crackling sound, and the sweet scent of burning sugar cane.
